A cautionary tale about an all-consuming obsession “I can hear women’s legs talking to me, God help me.”
“In the course of time, legs developed a language of their own.
‘Youth,’ they said. ‘Pain and loss.’
‘Death,’ said the legs. ‘Forgotten pleasure.’
‘Forbidden,’ said the legs. ‘No through road.’
From stumbling over a few basic and clumsy phrases in the early days, I gradually became disturbingly fluent.
‘Yes,’ said the legs. ‘Your right of way.’”
“So funny, so absurd, so educational it is to be a man!”
First published in the Irish magazine Grotesque, this surreally erotic short story – set in the Montmartre quarter of Paris and in Berlin – describes what happens when women’s legs begin telling a muddled businessman stories.
Watched over by the spirit of Salvador Dalì, inadvertent attendance of a prayer meeting in Sacré-Cœur during a thunderstorm leads the protagonist to enlightenment, with devastating results.
Is the voice of a woman’s legs to be trusted – and are you hearing anything yet?

I stumbled across Chris Bell's short story, The Leg Man, accidently and what a fortunate accident it was to find this writer. Within the first few chapters I was awash with relief. The language is evocative and lyrical and the understanding of human behaviour subtle. I wasn't sure at first how to view the story. Through the lens of a microscope or to stand back and see the story in its entirety as if I were looking at an impressionist work of art.The narrator, Sam, is a married man who, on a business trip, finds himself with time to spare to indulge his obsession: a fetish for the female leg. So entranced with the beauty and form of a youthful pair of slender legs, Sam imagines the legs speak to him. He makes no attempt to befriend any of the women he passes in the streets and cafes, for people are a simply a means to an end. His addiction is advanced and has robbed him of compassion. He is too obsessed and focused on the erotic movement of their legs and the sensual comfort he receives from their proximity.
The story is set against a surreal Daliesque backdrop in the grey, sweaty, damp streets and cafes of Paris and Berlin. Reality is blurred, time shifts, memories merge but that is unimportant to our obsessed hero. The plot is almost dispensed with or submerged in the dream-like atmosphere and descriptions of a thwarted sexual desire that finds no satisfactory vent.
To me this story is about loss: loss of youth, job, connection, balance, perspective and finally loss of sanity. Yet the story isn't a morbid descent into madness. The element of absurdity, clever use of language and dry wit kept me entranced until the last word and then I read it again.
I immediately wanted to read more of the work of Chris Bell. I haven't read a New Zealand writer of short stories this good for a long time.
